From Nearly 20 Years at Istanbul Bilgi University to Freelancing

After nearly two decades at Istanbul Bilgi University, I made a decision that would reshape my entire career. In November 2024, I left my long-term position to become a freelancer. This is the story of why I made that change and what I've learned along the way.
The Long Chapter at Bilgi University
For almost twenty years, I worked at Istanbul Bilgi University. It was a long chapter of my professional life, one that shaped how I think, work, and approach design and development today.
Working at a university is a unique experience. It offers a rare opportunity to learn continuously, not only through formal education but through constant exposure to different disciplines, people, and ideas. Over the years, I learned far more than just technical skills. I learned how institutions work, how long-term systems are maintained, and how digital products evolve over time rather than being rebuilt every year.
The Challenges of Long-Term In-House Work
At the same time, working for a single institution comes with its own challenges. The customer is always the same. While this creates stability, it can also be creatively limiting. Design decisions need to fit into long-standing structures, expectations, and processes. Innovation is possible, but it often moves slowly and within strict boundaries.
Another downside of long-term in-house work is the difficulty of building a visible portfolio. Many projects are internal, ongoing, or owned entirely by the institution. You solve real problems every day, but very little of that work can be shown publicly. Over time, this creates a gap between experience and what you can actually present as work.
The Decision to Change
Eventually, I felt the need for change. Leaving a long-term position was not an easy decision, but it was the right one. I discovered that I genuinely enjoy working from home. The focus, flexibility, and control over my time suit both my personality and my way of working.
More importantly, freelancing allows me to work with different clients, industries, and problem spaces. Every project comes with new constraints, new goals, and new creative challenges.
Life as a Freelancer

Recently, I also started supporting a game design and development company. This has been especially rewarding, as it combines technical problem solving with creativity in a fast-moving and experimental environment. It is a reminder of why I chose this profession in the first place.
This shift was not about leaving something behind, but about making space for what comes next. The years I spent at Istanbul Bilgi University gave me a strong foundation, both professionally and personally. Freelancing allows me to build on that foundation with intention, curiosity, and freedom.
Looking Forward
Today, I focus on doing meaningful work with people and projects I believe in, while continuing to learn and adapt. After nearly two decades in one place, choosing a more flexible and independent path feels like the right direction forward.
